FAQs

FAQs

Q: What makes Houston Dance Works different from other studios?

A: HDW isn’t just a place to take class — it’s a dance home. Our Academy program welcomes every child, building confidence, friendships, and life skills that last well beyond the studio. For dancers ready for more, our invitation-only Accelerated track has earned multiple national champion titles while keeping a positive, supportive culture. Families in 77018 choose HDW because we offer the best of both worlds: high-quality training and a community where kids belong, families stay, and champions are made.

Q: What ages can enroll at HDW?

A: We welcome dancers as young as 18 months in Parent & Me and offer classes through high school. Our programs are grouped by age and level so every dancer feels challenged but supported.

Q: Do you offer both recreational and competitive options?

A: Yes. Most dancers are part of our Academy program, which is open to everyone. Dancers seeking more intensive training may audition for our Accelerated teams or join Pre-Accelerated and Hip-Hop Crew.

Q: Why choose dance over another extracurricular activity?

A: Dance combines the benefits of athletics, creativity, and community. Kids build coordination, discipline, and confidence while learning teamwork and self-expression. Many parents find dance uniquely balances physical activity with artistic growth.

Q: When does registration open?

A: Fall registration typically opens in late summer, and summer session registration opens in April. Classes often fill quickly, so early registration is encouraged.

Q: How do I register my child for classes?

A: Registration is simple through our online portal. You’ll complete the form, pay the registration fee, and select your classes. You can also register in person at the studio during office hours.

Q: Can we try a class before enrolling?

A: Yes! We offer trial classes so your dancer can experience HDW before committing. Contact the office to schedule.

Q: Can my child join after the season has started?

A: Absolutely. We welcome new dancers throughout the year. Tuition is prorated so you only pay for the portion of the season remaining.

Q: Can we switch classes if the schedule doesn’t work?

A: Yes, if space is available before costumes are set. Our staff will help you find the best fit for your dancer’s age, level, and schedule.

Q: How is tuition calculated?

A: Tuition is based on the full dance season (August–May) and divided into nine equal monthly installments. The first installment is due at registration, with the remaining eight due on the 1st of each month, October–May. The summer is one payment.

Q: What if we start mid-season — how is tuition adjusted?

A: Your first installment is prorated so you only pay for the portion of the season left from the date of enrollment.

Q: When is tuition due and are there late fees?

A: Tuition is due on the 1st of the month. A $10 late fee is added after the 3rd. Dancers may not return to class if tuition is unpaid by the 15th.

Q: What if my child has to miss class?

A: If you know in advance, let us know. Dancers may attend a make-up class when space is available. We encourage dancers to miss no more than two classes per semester to stay on track.

Q: Do you offer make-up classes?

A: Yes. Make-ups can be scheduled in a similar class of the same age/level, pending availability.

Q: Can parents watch class?

A: Parents do not enter classrooms, but we offer several ways to stay connected: closed-circuit monitors in the lobby, app-based viewing, and rotating observation weeks.

Q: Does Houston Dance Works offer private lessons?

A: Yes. Private lessons are available for dancers who want one-on-one training, solo/duet preparation, or focused work on technique. Space is limited and scheduled through the office.

Q: Can HDW provide choreography for school dance or cheer teams?

A: Yes. Our faculty regularly choreographs for middle school, high school, and community teams. Contact us to discuss custom choreography or master classes for your program.

Q: What is the difference between non-leveled, Level 1–2, and Level 2–3 classes?

A: Non-leveled classes are open to all dancers in the age group and focus on building a foundation. Level 1–2 classes introduce more technique and are best for dancers with prior experience or strong readiness. Level 2–3 classes move at a faster pace and require greater skill and commitment, preparing dancers for higher-level training. Placement is guided by our instructors to ensure every dancer feels both challenged and successful.

These leveled classes also serve as excellent preparation for our Accelerated Dance program.

Q: Does HDW have an annual recital?

A: Yes! Every dancer age 2+ has the opportunity to perform in our year-end recital at Cullen Performance Hall. It’s a full production with professional lighting, staging, and sound — a true celebration of our dancers’ hard work.

Q: What are the “Dedication to Dance” awards?

A: At Houston Dance Works, we believe in celebrating hard work and long-term commitment. Each year at recital, we honor dancers who have been with us for 3 years, 5 years, 10 years, and graduating seniors. To be eligible, dancers must be enrolled before October 31st of the season. Awards are based on the number of months a student has danced at HDW — not simply the number of recitals performed.
