A Guide To HDW

What to Bring to Class

  • Dance Bag
  • Dance Shoes
  • Water Bottle
  • Hair Tie

What to Expect on the First Day:

Starting a new dance class is exciting, but it can also feel a little scary. At Houston Dance Works, we want every dancer and family to know that nerves, hesitation, and even tears are completely normal, especially during the first few weeks.

When you arrive, check in at the front desk and let our team know you are new. We will help you find your studio and make sure you know where to go. Dancers should arrive dressed for class and ready to move.

Once class begins, your dancer will meet their teacher and classmates and start getting familiar with the studio. Some dancers will walk right in and jump into class, while others may need a little extra encouragement. Younger dancers may cry, cling to a parent, or feel unsure about participating at first. This is a very normal part of adjusting to a new environment and being away from a parent or caregiver.

Please don’t worry if the first class doesn’t go exactly as expected. It can take several classes, or even a few weeks, for a dancer to feel comfortable. Our teachers and staff are experienced in helping new dancers settle in, and we will always encourage them at their own pace.

As your dancer becomes familiar with their teacher, classmates, routines, and the studio environment, you will likely see their confidence grow. A dancer who was nervous to walk into class may soon be the one who cannot wait to get through the door!

Most importantly, give your dancer time. There is no expectation that they will be perfect on day one. Their first few weeks are about building trust, getting comfortable, trying something new, and discovering the joy of dance.

We are so excited to welcome your family to HDW and be part of your dancer’s journey!

Finding Your Dance Room:

We know your first visit to HDW can feel a little confusing, especially if you have never been to the studio before. Here is a quick guide to help you find the right entrance for your dancer.

Parking is available in front of the Main Studio building as well as in front of the Studio O building. Your dancer’s classroom will determine which entrance you should use.

Main Studio Rooms

For dancers in the Yellow Room, Blue Room, or Green Room, use the entrance located in the Main Studio.

Studio O & Studio P

Studio O and Studio P are located in the back building. If your dancer is in one of these studios, park in front of the Studio O building and follow the pathway to the appropriate studio entrance.

First Day Tip

Give yourself a few extra minutes on your first visit to find your dancer’s room. If you are unsure where to go, our front desk team is happy to help!

Once you know which room your dancer is in, finding your way around HDW will become easy!
